Art and Culture on Quadra Island, B.C.

The diverse community of Quadra Island is reflected in the art and culture of the island. There are many resident artists living and practicing their crafts to various degrees. The Quadra Island Community Centre is a hive of activity throughout the year and many concerts, plays, workshops and performances of all types happen here. For a current calendar of coming events, click here or visit www.discoveryislander.ca for all the local news and events.

Quadra Island's rich culture is a mix of: deep-rooted and contemporary aboriginal traditions and art forms; cottage crafters producing a wide range of practical and aesthetic products; artisans and artists practicing pottery, carving, sculpture, paint, mixed media and the whole gamut of media and traditions.

While many of Quadra Island's artists are immersed in their art they welcome visits to their studios, galleries and other facilities. Some are open year round while others limit opening to summer, most by appointment but the highlight of the year is the annual Quadra Island Studio Tour when Quadra's arts community organize a mass opening and self-guided tour to over 30 studios.

Here's how the Quadra Island Studio Tour organizers present it:

Set your sights on Quadra Island, B.C. this June, for the annual Quadra Island Artists Studio Tour. Visit Quadra Island, known as “The Jewel of the Northern Gulf Islands.” A scenic 12-minute ferry ride from Campbell River, the island boasts the best views in the world.

Over 30 artists open their studios to present distinctive, original work by painters, jewellers, carvers, potters, sculptors, weavers, fabric artists and furniture makers. See a glass blower at work, watch the magic of clay on the potter’s wheel, and experience a moment of First Nations cultural heritage and tradition explored through wood, silver and dance.

After the Studio Tour weekend, many of the island artists keep their studios open for the rest of the summer or year-round. A free brochure and map is available for a self-guided tour.

Quadra has many other charms for those who come to visit. The island’s natural beauty inspires all who come. Whether you enjoy outdoor activity at Quadra’s many remote lakes, trails, fishing and kayaking areas, or if you prefer a quiet stroll or picnic at Rebecca Spit Provincial Park, whale watching or wildlife tours, Quadra has it all. Settle in at a 4 star resort, a cozy B&B or a beachfront campsite.

Plan now to experience inspiring surroundings, invigorating ocean air, friendly locals and of course...fabulous art!
